12 – Using Landmarks (tracking & trailing for kids)

If you ever find yourself coming into territory you do not know – look out for landmarks that will help you to find your way back again. Anything that stands out obviously will do, so long as it cannot move. It must still be there when you want to come back. In towns, use such things as parking garages, churches, and shops. In the country, look for such things as stiles, gates, farm houses and odd lone trees.

Memorize things so that you recognize them on the way back. Here are some things to look for.

WARNING

Wherever you are – in the town or country – remember to look back from time to time, especially before you change direction. This will help you to recognize your route on the way back. Remember that things look very different when you are going the other way – you are seeing the other side of them. The things you noted will also be on the other side. Where you turned left on the way out, you will have to turn right coming back.
